George Bellairs is the pseudonym for the English banker Harold Blundell, born in Heywood in Lancashire and known as a philanthropist. In 1959, he was endowed with an honorary M.A. by the University of Manchester for both his charity work and his authorship of crime fiction. He was an enthusiastic Francophile, and the setting for several of his novels was France, which made them especially popular there.
