He was born in Cambridge as George Douglas Howard Cole, but got his basic schooling at St. Paul’s School in London. He subsequently started at Oxford University, his subjects including classical and modern literature, and he gained a good degree. He got a position as professor of philosophy at the University of Durham 1913-14, but then returned to London where he did research for an organisation of engineers. In 1919 he got a position at the University of London where he remained until 1925. He then became a lecturer at Oxford University, a position he retained until 1957. He died two years later after a long period of illness.
