The American writer and translator Helen White Eustis was what would in a musical context be called a "one hit wonder". Her critically acclaimed The Horizontal Man (1946) is often well placed when the best crime novel of all times is chosen. It is considered a major classic, and none of the books she published after that has come anyway near it in popularity.
