The American author Paula Gosling was born in Detroit, Michigan, as Paula Osius. By the time she attended Mackenzie High School in Detroit 1953–57 she was already an accomplished storyteller. She went on to read English at Wayne State University, Detroit, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1962. The same year she got a job as a copywriter in her hometown. As she did not enjoy the job she travelled to England with a friend in 1964 to try her luck there, and she has lived in the UK ever since. She continued to work in advertising, and in 1968 she married a colleague, Christopher Gosling. The couple had two children. Three years after divorcing her husband in 1978, Gosling married John A. Hare. Her first novel was an immediate success when it appeared in 1978, and the following year Paula Gosling started to write full time. She moved to Bath where she still lives.
