Groller, Balduin

At the end of the 19th century and early in the 20th century, Austrian author Adalbert Goldscheider wrote a large number or novels, short stories and comedies under the pseudonym Balduin Groller. The books that received the most attention were the crime short stories about Dagobert Trostler, known as ‘The Sherlock Holmes of Vienna’: In Queen’s Quorum (1951), Ellery Queen lists Trostler as one of the 50 most important literary detective characters. He was, however, about to be forgotten, but in the 2000s interest grew and many stories have been re-issued in German and – for the first time – a selection has even been published in English as The Adventures of Dagobert Trostler : Vienna’s Sherlock Holmes (2017).
