The British author Reginald Charles Hill was born in West Hartlepool, Durham, but he moved with his family to Carlisle, Cumberland (now Cumbria) when he was three years old after his father, a professional footballer, had been bought by Carlisle United. Reginald Hill attended Stanwix School where he med Patricia "Pat" Ruell. They were married in 1960. The marriage was childless, but the couple were great dog and cat lovers.
