American author and journalist, son of the famous and politically very active lawyer Nicholas Katzenbach, later the US attorney general. John’s father – who came from a wealthy family – served in several cities, and John was first educated at the religious Sidwell Friends School, then at Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire, and finally at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, where he graduated in 1972.
