William Kent Krueger is an American author of crime fiction born in Torrington, Wyoming. His father was a teacher, but as both parents found it hard to settle down, the family lived at "eleven different addresses in eight different cities in six different states" while he was growing up. In 1964, they finally set up home in Hood River, Oregon, where Krueger attended high school with good grades. In 1968, the family moved on to Manteca, California, where he graduated in 1969, and later the same year he enrolled at Stanford University near Palo Alto, California, but was expelled in 1970 in connection with the student revolts. He has described this period of his life as happy. He also met and fell in love with Diane, a law student. They married in 1973 and had two children. Krueger has worked as a logger, ditch digger, construction worker and freelance journalist. He briefly read law at Metropolitan State University, Denver, Colorado, at the same time as his wife, but he soon dropped out.
