Peter Lovesey is a British author of detective stories. He was born in Whitton, Middlesex, to Richard Lear, a bank clerk, and his wife Amy Lovesey. He was given his mother’s surname, but he used his father’s name for the pen name Peter Lear. Peter Lovesey attended the University of Reading 1955–58, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in English. He then did his national service in the RAF and served as an RAF Education Officer 1958–61 after which he taught English at Thunrock Technical College. He was head of the Education Department at London’s Hammersmith College until 1975. He is now a full-time writer living in Surrey. He married Jacqueline Ruth Lewis, a psychologist, in 1959. They have a son and a daughter. Phil Lovesey is the author of several thrillers.
