Johanna Nilsson was born in Uppsala and moved with her family to Borlänge when she was six years old. Her parents were members of the Mission Covenant Church of Sweden, and this background that has come to inform her life and work. She is no longer "fundamental", but she often prays and holds conversations with God. To her, the Christian faith is about people looking after each other and caring about those who are on the margins of society, she says. She read all the classics at a young age, among them Astrid Lindgren, C.S. Lewis, Ursula K. Le Guin and Jules Verne. As an adult she admires Virginia Woolf, Karin Boye, Tomas Tranströmer and Joyce Carol Oates.
