The American author Nicholas Austin "Nic" Pizzolatto is the author of the bestselling novel Galveston (2010) and the television drama True Detective screenplay. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, as the son of a lawyer and a schoolteacher of Italian descent, both poor, deeply religious Catholics. When Nic was five years old, they moved with their four children to Lake Charles, Louisiana. According to Pizzolatto it was an economically deprived town populated by violent, ignorant people that consumed large amounts of alcohol, and there were no books or any other form of intellectual stimulation at home. After graduating from St. Louis Catholic High School in 1993, he left town and broke with his family.
