The British author Andrew John Robert Taylor was born in Stevenage, Hertfordshire and grew up in East Anglia. He attended King’s School at Ely, Cambridgeshire, 1959–65 and Woodbridge School, Suffolk, 1965–69. He graduated from Emmanuel College, Cambridge, with an MA in English in 1973 and moved to London where he worked as a teacher, boat builder and freelance editor before going back to university, graduating with an MA in Library, Archive and Information Science from University College, London, in 1979. After a library career he became a full-time author in 1981. He also writes book reviews. Taylor moved to the Forest of Dean in 1982 together with his wife since 1979, the librarian and photographer Caroline Silverwood, and their two children.
