The shy and reserved teacher and author June Valerie Thomson is reluctant to give up information about her life, it is not even entirely clear where she was born. Some sources quote somewhere in Kent, but most agree on the village of Rettendon in Essex where she grew up. She attended Chelmsford High School for Girls in 1941 to 1949 and went on to read English at the University of London, graduating with a BA in 1952.
