Scott Frederick Turow is an American author born in Chicago, Illinois, where his father was working as a physicist. Both parents were descended from Russian Jews. Turow graduated from Trier High School, Winnetka, Illinois, in 1966 and went on to study at Amherst College, Massachusetts, graduating with a BA in 1970. He won a grant to read creative writing at Stanford University, California, and was awarded an MA in 1972. He then taught at Stanford until 1975 when he enrolled at Harvard Law School where he was awarded his Juris Doctor degree in 1978.
