Henry Wade is the pseudonym for Baronet (not to be confused with baron) Henry (Lancelot) Aubrey-Fletcher, born in Leigh, in Surrey, England, and the holder of a whole row of prestigious official appointments: he was, for example, the Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire, a magistrate and ‘high sheriff’. He was educated at Eton and the University of Oxford before he did military service 1908-20. He was wounded twice during the First World War, and was awarded English as well as French medals. He also served during the Second World War, and in the inter-war years became to a certain degree known as a cricketer.
