The American author Cornell Woolrich is one of the more eccentric authors of the 20th century. He was an anti-social recluse who lived most of his life in cheap hostels and had a strong attachment to his mother. As the author of books and screenplays as well as psychological horror stories, he is one of America’s greatest authors of noir fiction. The author and scholar Francis M. Nevins has called him "the Poe of the 20th century ".
